During the past two years of Covid (or is it three) I have been working on the meaning of love. Ultimately, as we progress as conscious people, we learn to have deeper and deeper compassion for those who suffer. One of the lessons I have learned from covid is to be kinder and more patient with those who demonstrate anger and fear because they feel insecure and helpless. I have even learned to have more compassion for the people like the Freedom Convoy because they fear losing control of their own lives. They are hurting too; they just do not know how to process it. They are responding through anger. Others feel dispair which often leads to depression, suicide attempts, drug abuse, and overdose and death. It is up to us who are conscious beings to truly see the feelings behind their actions. We need to feel and demonstrate compassion.

First let’s look at what compassion is not. We are not compassionate to gain approval from others or even to satisfy the needs of our ego. It is not just a feel-good activity in the sense that we experience pride and pleasure when we are sharing our resources with those who have less. We do not have to give until our minds are empty and our hearts are broken. We know we do not have to try to change the world because that is the domain of the Universal Presence, not ours. It is not about casting out the feelings of guilt when we have more than we need, and others are barely surviving. If we have abundance, we simply have abundance. It is what it is. It gives us the opportunity to share.

Compassion is a combination of heart love which is our desire to reach out and connect with others, and soul love where we strive to make our own small corner of the world a better place to live for our fellow human beings. True compassion then is the natural function of a conscious person. When we give, there is a smile that says, ‘I will stay with you through this difficult time. I will share all my physical, emotional, and spiritual resources to support you until you can carry yourself.’ It is what we would do for our sons and daughters; we treat everyone in need as though they are family.

When we give through the urging of our hearts and souls, we receive more than we give. Compassion is the outpouring of the love that flows through our souls from the Universal Source of life and love. As we show compassion, we not only bless the person or persons we serve, but in the process, we are also blessed. We experience the joy of living and share our love for life with others. Through acts of compassion we make this world a better place to love.

Ode to Compassion

Morning has broken through the gray.
I have lived too long on this Earth.
I feel the weight of being only human
with opaque perceptions from the mist.

Then the sun takes its place in the Eastern sky.
Shadows, remnants of darkness, begin to form.
My mind begins to plan another busy day,
all the things I have to do to survive and thrive.

I take a few minutes to meditate.
I plant my bare feet solidly on Mother Earth.
I absorb her precious ions of energy
that flow into the crevices of my brain
washing away angst of the previous day.

My dreams settle into their proper place
waiting for the right moment to begin
their daily search for Truth,
for meaning,
for purpose,
waiting for the flow of love,
the energy that will make all things happen
in the right order,
at the right time,
for the right reason.

The shadows disappear in the noon day light.
I stand in awe of the life I feel all around me,
the force that flows in me and through me.
I sense the patterns of divine light that exist
beyond the color spectrum of my human eyes.
As I reach out to touch the invisible,
ecstasy flows into my heart and mind.
I begin to see, to feel, that Sacred Presence.
Compassion begins to flow through my heart.
I feel a cooling sensation that washes my mind.
It pacifies the war inside.
It shows me that I have all I need, all I want.
It urges me to share my abundance with others.

I love this life,
these divine moments,
this soul that lives and breathes,
this loving heart that chooses to care,
this mind that seeks out the path to Truth,
this body that takes me to where I need to go,
this soul that has learned how to walk and talk
with The Infinite.
